Cleve Smith is Smith Harris & Carr's founding principal, originally starting the firm as Smith Reed and Associates in 1980. Smith's impressive experience on a wide range of issues contributes to his formidable reputation as one of the top state lobbyists in the country.
Hospitals, health care, malt beverages, tobacco and state finances are among the various issues that Cleve has tackled during his tenure on Capitol Hill. He has worked extensively on special projects outside of Tennessee for HCA, in particular, and has headed grassroots efforts in the state for a number of clients.
Smith has moved toward emeritus status over the past few years and recently opened a south Florida branch office of the firm. His relationships and knowledge continue to run deep in state government, however, and with cell phone in hand, Cleve is never out of the action.
A native of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, he is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and holds a B.S. in Business.
Smith is married and has two daughters and three grandchildren. He and his wife, Jane Ann, divide their time between Nashville and Goodland, Florida.
